History

The Federal Route 4 was built in the 1967 as a defence-related road. In the early stages, there was military presence in every kilometre. The road was built to cut off the Communist Party of Malaya from the safe havens in Thailand. Many lives were lost during its construction, mainly due to Communist insurgency. Originally the road opened only in daytime. With the surrender of the Communist Party in Thailand, the road became an important route between the state of Terengganu, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah and Penang besides providing with spectacular forests views and excellent drive along the Temenggor Lake.
